The Conflict between Infertility and Catholicism

Infertility and Catholicism do not get along. It is mainly because the Catholic Church disapproves of infertility treatment for certain people. In 1990, the Pope decided that infertility treatments are not in line with the Church's beliefs. The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church and he is the main decision-maker for the church. The Church believes that some people do not have a right to children. They also believe that couples do not have a right to have any infertility treatment in order to conceive a child. Hence, infertility and Catholicism are in conflict.

What are The Church's Beliefs?

The Catholic Church is very specific on why infertility and Catholicism are in conflict. The Catholics believe that conception should happen in the natural relation between a husband and wife. This applies to conception means of any kind, natural or unnatural. They believe that infertility help should only be allowed for married couples. They feel that science is not right in allowing pregnancy through scientific ways. Infertility and Catholicism conflict because the Church feels that conception is the beginning of life and external fertilization is not proper as in the realm of the husband and wife coming together for sex.

Infertility and Catholicism also do not agree on creation and discarding of unused spare embryos. The treatments of infertility only made use of mature embryos that are viable. The rest are discarded if not used for any other purpose. It would seem that infertility and Catholicism can only come to a common ground if no donor sperm and no spare embryos are used in the infertility treatments. The fertilization must also be through intercourse between husband and wife. This means things be like infertility drugs. Of course the pregnancy cannot be through surrogate mother for infertility and Catholicism is very strict on this point.

What to Do about Infertility and Catholicism?

If you have to deal with infertility and Catholicism, you have fewer options available for infertility treatments you unless you choose to go against the Church's beliefs. However, you can always choose to adopt a child through a Catholic organization. If you can not have children naturally, the problem of infertility and Catholicism will not allow you to take many modern infertility treatments.
